3rd I-WASH Summer Course Strengthens Relationship between ITB, AIT, and Mahidol University Students
Bandung, gsgs-ina.itb.ac.id – the Master of Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Management (PIAS) Study Programme of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) is holding the Integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (I-WASH) Summer Course for the third time from July to August 2024.
This year’s 3rd I-WASH Summer Course theme was WASH in Emergency Settings. As the program organiser, PIAS ITB invited Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, and Mahidol University (MU), Thailand to participate in this annual event.

There were 32 participants in total, including undergraduate and master’s students from different countries of origin. More than 50% of the participants were ITB students, 17 to be exact, consisting of 12 master’s students and 5 undergraduate students. The other 15 participants were master’s students at AIT and MU from different countries, such as Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal.
Summer course activities were conducted in hybrid format (online and oflline). Online classes were held on 13 to 28 July, and 5 to 13 August 2024. Meanwhile, the offline classes were held on 29 July to 4 August 2024.
The online classes were conducted through zoom meetings, inviting various professionals working in the field of WASH in emergency settings. Some of them are Prof. Damir Brdjanovic from IHE Delft, Netherlands; Prof. Thammarat for AIT, Thailand; Dr. Nawatch Surinkul form MU, Thailand; Prof. Irwan Meilano from ITB, Indonesia; Hilman Agung form Oxfam International; Maraita Listyasari and Enrico Djonoputro from UNICEF, Indonesia; Avianto Amri, Ph.D. from PREDIKT, Indonesia; and Agung Lestyawan form International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The oflline activties were held for about one week, which included welcoming foreign students at ITB Ganesha Campus, visiting Saung Angklung Udjo, WASH in Emergency Settings field practice lecture at the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Education and Training Centre (PUSDIKLAT) Jatinangor, hiking along the Lembang fault, and camping in Cikole.
Dr. Dyah Wulandari Putri, S.T., M.T., who is the chairperson of the I-WASH Summer Course 2024 organising committee said in her speech during camping in Cikole on Friday (2/8/2024) after being given a birthday surprise by all the committee and participatns.
“You made new friends, new networks. We (the committee) hope that what we share with you all becomes something valuable to you,” she said after thanking everyone for the surprise.

In addition to focusing on the participants’ understanding of WASH in emergency settings, the I-WASH Summer Course since three years ago continues to be a successful event for local and foreign students to introduce their respective cultures. Not only does this programme provide participants with academic knowledge, but it also fosters mutual respect and appreciation of differences between nations and cultures.
On the last day of the I-WASH Summer Course 2024, winners were announced for the best participant and best group categories. All participants were also given certificates as a sign of having participated in the summer course.
